HS codes: a practical introduction

What the numbers mean and why the wrong code costs money.
October 31, 2026 by

An HS code classifies a product for customs. The first six digits are international; countries may add more digits for duties and statistics.

How to use it

  • Describe the product by its essential material and use, not by its brand.
  • Check the current tariff in the destination country.
  • Ask the supplier for the code they use and compare it with your own.
  • Keep the code, product description and documents consistent.

A wrong code can change the duty, delay clearance or create a compliance problem. When in doubt, ask a customs broker before shipping.
